The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc recently outlined the conditions necessary for a potential second season of the series. In a recent interview, LeFranc stated that for Season 2 to happen, the creative team would need to feel confident they could surpass the storytelling of Season 1. She emphasized the importance of having a compelling reason to continue, noting that any additional season would require a meaningful expansion of the characters and themes introduced in the first season.
The Penguin Season 2 could happen if it can top Season 1
The Penguin Season 2 hinges on the creators’ confidence in delivering a storyline that surpasses Season 1’s.
During an interaction with The Direct at New York Comic Con (NYCC), showrunner Lauren LeFranc clarified, “We need to feel like we can top ourselves… I think that in order to do a second season, we have to feel like we can top ourselves. We have to feel like there’s something more there to really dig into.” She further expressed her investment in the characters, adding, “I mean, I really care about all these characters, even if they’re terrible people.”
LeFranc expressed a willingness to continue, stating, “I’d love to keep playing… it just has to be the right thing.” She said they should “never do anything just to do it.” However, a potential Season 2 would mean Colin Farrell would again need to undergo the extensive prosthetic work required to transform into Oz Cobb. LeFranc described this as “a taxing thing,” but noted Farrell’s positive attitude, saying, “He was a joy. And I mean that so sincerely because I don’t have to say that, but it’s deeply true.”
Discussing the fan response to The Penguin, LeFranc observed, “It’s really thrilling that people seem to connect to it emotionally.” She acknowledged the appreciation for the series’ detailed character portrayals and unique tones, remarking, “I really appreciate that people are caring about all the little details that I cared about as a writer, that people are responding to the humor and the mix of tones.”
As of now, it’s uncertain if Max or Matt Reeves will greenlight another season. Reeves has confirmed that Farrell’s character will appear in The Batman: Part II, continuing Oz Cobb’s story. Additionally, one other The Batman spinoff series is confirmed to be in development, with Reeves showing interest in a potential series focusing on Harvey Dent.
The Penguin is now streaming on Max.
