James Gunn Denies Justice League Movie Rumor Based on Popular DC Storyline

James Gunn, the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, recently dispelled one of the key rumors circulating about the franchise and a potential Justice League movie through his account on Threads. Besides sharing the leadership duties of DCU with Peter Safran, Gunn is at the helm of several of its projects. He is the creator of Peacemaker and Creature Commandos, and the director of 2025’s Superman.

James Gunn rejects rumor about directing Justice League: The New Frontier movie

A fan shared a screenshot of an Instagram handle linking to another social media account, claiming that a live-action Justice League: The New Frontier with Gunn as writer and director was in development. In the caption, the fan tagged Gunn and asked if it was real. In response, the filmmaker posted, “Nope sorry. No truth to this whatsoever.”

Gunn added in the replies section, “That said I love New Frontier and its magical alternate history is a big influence on DC Studios.”

Notably, DC: The New Frontier is a limited comic book series from writer-artist Darwyn Cooke. Published in 2004 by DC Comics, the series garnered multiple Eisner, Harvey, and Shuster Awards. In 2008, an animated movie adaptation of the comics, Justice League: The New Frontier, came out. Dave Bullock directed the movie, in which Jeremy Sisto voiced Batman, David Boreanaz voiced Green Lantern, and Kyle MacLachlan voiced Superman. Less than a month later, DC released Justice League: The New Frontier Special, an anthology one-shot tie-in comic depicting various incidents that took place during the events of the movie.

Although a New Frontier may not part of the part of the DCU slate, at least for now, there is an expansive plan in place for the franchise. Besides Superman, some of the publicly announced DCU movies are Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing. Two untitled projects based on Teen Titans, and Bane and Deathstroke have also been announced. Among the upcoming DCU TV projects are Lanterns, Waller, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and the untitled Blue Beetle series.
