Report: Ant-Man 3 Box Office Was Actually Profitable

A recent report revealed that Marvel’s 2023 movie Ant-Man 3 actually made a profit despite being a box office flop. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was set to be another stepping stone in solidifying Jonathan Majors’ character, Kang the Conqueror, as the big MCU bad. However, it didn’t work as the actor was fired after being proven guilty in his assault case.

Ant-Man 3 reportedly made a profit at worldwide box office

Ant-Man 3 actually turned out to be profitable for Marvel Studios. This is despite the film having a rather underwhelming performance at the box office.

As per Forbes, although the movie earned $476 million at the box office, its budget was a huge one, amounting to $388.4 million. This led to many believe that it might not have made a profit. However, the Forbes report suggests that Ant-Man 3 made $88,236 in net profit. It was all due to the benefits of the UK tax credit aka Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (AVEC).

As per the outlet, this credit is provided to any film after it is shot in the UK. The amount of the credit is 25.5 percent of what amount they use for expenditures in the UK. However, AVEC is only given after production houses fulfill the condition to have at least 10 percent of their budget comprised of costs incurred in the UK. Moreover, this has to be recorded in financial statements.

As per the Forbes report, the credit amount that Disney received for Ant-Man 3 was approximately $58.3 million. Thus, despite being a mediocre film for Marvel Studios and also receiving a 46 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, it did do some good. In addition, Box Office Mojo further states that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania took an opening of $106 million. This was much better than its predecessors.
