Venom: The Last Dance’s Director Explains Why Michelle Williams Doesn’t Return

Although the final entry in Sony’s Venom universe, Venom: The Last Dance is yet to hit theatres, speculations regarding the fate of its pivotal characters have started stemming out. While Venom 3 effectively marked the end of Tom Hardy’s take on the monstrous anti-hero, it also introduced the villainous Knull to fans for the first time on the big screens. Another character whose future received clarity in Venom: The Last Dance is Michelle Williams’ Anne. In a recent discussion, Venom 3’s director, Kelly Marcell, finally revealed why Eddie Brock’s love interest from the original film was missing from his final outing.

Kelly Marcell reveals why Michelle Williams’ Anne wasn’t in Venom: The Last Dance

Marcell stated that Michelle Williams’ character was absent from Venom: The Last Dance as they wanted to focus on the bonding between Tom Hardy’s Eddie and the iconic symbiote.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the accredited filmmaker shed light on the creative decisions that ultimately led to Anne’s omission from Venom. “We really wanted to isolate them. We wanted to take them away from their comfort zone. Marcell explained, “We wanted to take them away from everything they knew and everyone they loved, so that they really only had each other to rely on now.”

However, Marcell admitted that there was a significant risk attached to taking out Michelle Williams and other elements that Eddie Brock was attached to from Venom: The Last Dance. It was to put the titular duo’s relationship under the limelight. “That quickly becomes very dangerous for them, because the very act of them being together means that the world is at risk,” said Marcell.

The filmmaker further added, “They come to understand that the thing that they have chosen is actually their downfall, and so all of the characters from the previous movies — other than Peggy Lu’s Mrs. Chen — didn’t belong in this road trip story.”

As such, Venom: The Last Dance officially concluded Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams’ run in the franchise. However, the symbiote saga will continue to expand via other Sony and possibly MCU-related projects in the future.
