The Russo Brothers have officially revealed that Avengers: Doomsday will begin filming in Spring 2025. During an interview with Collider, Joe Russo confirmed, “We do [have a start date]. It’s in the spring,” without specifying the exact day. Robert Downey Jr. will start filming as Doctor Doom next spring, returning to the MCU.
Kevin Feige initially announced Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom during the San Diego Comic-Con, alongside confirmation that the Russo Brothers would direct Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel will release the film on May 1, 2026, with Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role as Doctor Strange. Additionally, all four core members of the Fantastic Four will appear in the movie. However, specific details about the plot remain limited.
In the same interview, the Russo Brothers shared insights on the writing process for Avengers: Doomsday. Joe Russo explained, “We are right in the middle of the writing process. It’s Steve McFeely that’s writing the script.”
Long-time collaborator McFeely previously co-wrote Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The Russos further confirmed that they work closely with McFeely and Christopher Markus, adding, “We’ve always worked very closely with Markus and McFeely through all the work that we’ve done together.”
Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars are expected to have a larger break between productions compared to previous back-to-back filming schedules. Joe Russo mentioned, “It’ll be similar, but we’re not…we’ll have a larger break in between the two movies.”
With filming set to begin soon, fans can expect major updates as Avengers: Doomsday moves closer to its 2026 release.
