Guardians of the Galaxy: Zoe Saldaña Addresses Her MCU Future as Gamora

Guardians of the Galaxy alum Zoe Saldaña is ready to move on from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor recently expressed interest in moving on from the superhero franchise, which she has been part of since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Having played reformed assassin Gamora in all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, as well as two Avengers sequels — 2018’s Infinity War and 2019’s Endgame — Saldaña is ready to see a new, younger actress step into the role that helped turn her into a household name.

“Let it be a brown girl to play Gamora,” Saldaña told Variety in a recent wide-ranging interview that covered everything from Star Trek, Avatar, and the MCU to her new movie Emilia Pérez. “Give that opportunity to a woman of color and see what the new Gamora is going to bring to the table. Like I brought [Star Trek’s] Nyota Uhura to the table with Nichelle Nichols’ blessing.”

Where did Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leave the titular team?

The lineup of the titular cosmic team received a shakeup at the end of 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with Star-Lord, Mantis, Gamora, Drax, and Nebula leaving the time. The movie ended with the New Guardians lineup, consisting of Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, Phyla, and Blurp, with Rocket Racoon as their leader, taking on a mission.

While a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie has not been announced at this time, a note following Vol. 3’s post-credits scene revealed that “The Legendary Star-Lord will return.” This confirms that Marvel Studios has undisclosed plans for Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord in the future of the MCU. If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 were to be greenlit, it would be without the involvement of writer-director James Gunn, who is currently under an exclusivity contract with DC Studios.

MCU fans can stream all five movies featuring Saldaña’s Gamora on Disney+.
