James Gunn has provided an update on the Wonder Woman prequel series Paradise Lost after three months of silence.
When a fan asked Gunn on Threads about his current weekend activities, he shared that he was working on several projects, including Superman, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker. He also noted that he has to read “some scripts [he hasn’t] gotten to.” Another fan inquired about any progress on Paradise Lost, asking if “drafts are being sent in,” and Gunn replied, “Yes.”
In a conversation in July 2024, Gunn addressed the status of Paradise Lost. He confirmed that while the project was in “active development,” it had not been officially greenlit. Gunn stated, “Nothing is ‘in production’ unless it’s been greenlit.” He emphasized that production would only begin once the scripts were ready. Gunn also reiterated on Threads recently that projects typically go through “a number of drafts before greenlighting.”
Paradise Lost will serve as a prequel to Wonder Woman, exploring the political and societal intrigue of Themyscira before Diana’s birth. Although Gunn has not publicly confirmed any writers or cast members, his announcement of progress assures fans that the project is moving forward.
As of now, DC Studios has not announced a release date for Paradise Lost. It remains unclear if Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in the DCU, but the general assumption (after Wonder Woman 1984’s flop) is that Wonder Woman might be recast, similar to Batman and Superman. The series will be part of DC Studios’ Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Although the focus will be on Themyscira’s history, it will also lay the groundwork for future Wonder Woman-related stories.
