Joker 2’s Box Office Projections Drop, Budget Much Higher Than Original

Joker 2: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, finally hit theaters on October 4, 2024. The movie is witnessing much hype from the fans. However, the box office projection of Joker 2: Folie a Deux doesn’t seem to be looking good, despite a hefty budget. Thus, considering the massive success that its prequel had at the box office, fans have been wondering whether Joker 2 will attain the same.

Joker 2 projected to make $50-60 million at opening weekend box office

Even though the previous predictions pointed at a $70 million opening for the Joaquin Phoenix starrer, the recent early reviews of the movie have likely caused an impact.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the opening box office projection of Joker 2 has come down to $50 to $60 million. Till now, the movie has gotten a 39 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, way below the rating 2019’s Joker achieved. While the masses appreciated the first movie’s storyline, they have given mixed reviews to the second part.

Manohla Dargis of The New York Times critiqued the movie and wrote, “The big non-news about “Folie à Deux” is that it’s a half-baked, halfhearted musical complete with one star who can sing, Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel a.k.a. Harley Quinn, and another (Phoenix) who can’t or won’t.” As per THR, Warner Bros Studios is expecting $80 to $85 million from overseas. Albeit, it is still lower than the $96.2 million that which 2019 movie, Joker made in its debut.

Joker: Folie a Deux budget reported to be around $200 million

The aforementioned report by THR also suggests that Joker 2: Folie a Deux had the biggest budget out of both movies. Following the success of Joker in 2019, Todd Phillips was reportedly provided around $190 million to $200 million for the making of the sequel. On the other hand, the 2019 movie just a budget of $55 million and made over $1 billion at the box office.
