Sonic the Hedgehog 3 producer Toby Asche has revealed if the upcoming movie will be the last entry in the franchise.
Based on the best-selling video games, Paramount‘s beloved CG/live-action franchise began in 2020 with the movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, which was a major hit at the box office, grossing over $300 million worldwide. It was followed by a sequel, 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was also commercially successful, as well as a Paramount+ spin-off series centered around Knuckles the Echidna that debuted earlier this year. With the forthcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set to give the blue blur a completed trilogy, some fans have wondered if the sequel might also serve as the conclusion of the franchise.
Luckily for them, Ascher confirmed at today’s Sonic Central presentation (via ComicBook.com) that fans can look forward to plenty more of the blue hedgehog in the years to come. “There’s such a rich universe of stories,” teased Ascher. “I don’t see us slowing down at all.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 adds Shadow to the film franchise
While exact plans for the franchise beyond Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have not been revealed at this time, fans are likely to receive a tease as to what’s ahead at the end of the upcoming movie. Both the original movie and the 2022 sequel featured cliffhangers setting up the next film, with Sonic the Hedgehog introducing Tails and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 teasing Shadow the Hedgehog, who will be voiced by Keanu Reeves in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released in August 2024 and featured a ton of footage of Shadow, who was created by Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. Both Robotnik and his grandfather will be portrayed by Jim Carrey in the third movie.
The rest of the cast for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 includes returning stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Tom Butler as Commander Walters, Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, and Shemar Moore as Randall Handel.
New additions to the franchise include Krysten Ritter as Director Rockwell and Alyla Browne as Maria, as well as Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, James Wolk, and Jorma Taccone.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was directed by Jeff Fowler from a screenplay written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. The movie is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024.
