HBO’s recently released Penguin series has expanded the Batman universe established by Matt Reeves in 2022 while the director’s sequel, The Batman Part 2, is still in development. The show provides a deeper look into the life of Oswald Cobb and adds to the roster of villains in this version of Gotham. As such, fans are already excited to know what villains could appear in the film’s upcoming sequel. Due to the grounded approach of the first film and the Penguin series, many have speculated that The Batman Part 2 could finally mark the big-screen debut of the Court of Owls. In a recent discussion, director Matt Reeves addressed this burning question but decided to leave it unanswered.
Matt Reeves shies away from revealing The Batman Part 2 villains
Matt Reeves neither confirmed nor denied the involvement of the Court of Owls as the villains in The Batman Part 2. Rather, Reeves stated that he does not intend to let people know what kind of movie he is working on.
Reeves spoke about his desire to not reveal The Batman Part 2’s villains while promoting the new Penguin series at Showsha. During the conversation, the acclaimed filmmaker was asked if the Court of Owls would be making an appearance in his much-awaited Batman sequel. However, Reeves refused to provide fans with a definite answer. “We can’t comment on the movie because we are doing the movie and then you’d know what movie we’re doing,” the director said. “We’re not going to say that yet.”
The Court of Owls is essentially a covert criminal organization that consists of some of the wealthiest residents of Gotham City. The group was founded as soon as the city came into being but has managed to keep its existence a secret. The Court also maintains an executive wing, known as the Talons, which implements the organization’s dirty work.
Clayface, Hush, and Two-Face are other Batman villains who have been rumored to appear in The Batman Part 2. Barry Keoghan, who was cast as the Joker in Reeves’ first Batman movie, is also expected to return. However, Colin Farrell’s Penguin is the only antagonist whose involvement in the sequel has been confirmed so far.
The Batman Part 2 is currently scheduled to be released in theatres on October 2, 2026.
