Frank Grillo talks playing Rick Flag Sr. throughout DCU
ComingSoon’s Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke to star Frank Grillo about his new action movie Long Gone Heroes and his role in the DCU.
Grillo expressed his feelings about playing Rick Flag Sr. across various media platforms, including animation, live-action, and video games in the DCU saying, “It excites me. I can’t even tell you how.” He explained that this opportunity holds personal significance, particularly because of his 16-year-old son’s deep interest in superhero content.
Rick Flag Sr., introduced in Secret Origins #14 (1987), led the Suicide Squadron during World War II, earning recognition for his military leadership. After the war, he commanded Task Force X, handling major crises. He eventually sacrificed himself to stop the War Wheel, cementing his legacy as a brave and strategic leader.
Grillo praised the vision of DCU heads James Gunn and Peter Safran for allowing him to portray Rick Flag Sr. across all formats. “What the opportunity that James Gunn and Peter Safran have given me… much like a Sam Jackson in the Marvel Universe… it’s one actor that the audience gets to attach to,” Grillo said. He emphasized that this approach fosters a consistent connection with fans.
He further expressed his gratitude for the opportunity stating, “I’m humbled. I’m grateful. I hope to be with them for a long, long time.” Frank Grillo will appear as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series Creature Commandos and also in live-action form in Superman (2025) and Peacemaker Season 2.
