Superman & Lois: Tom Cavanagh’s Mystery Role Teased by Showrunner

The fourth and final season of Superman & Lois is confirmed to feature fan-favorite The Flash actor Tom Cavanagh, just not as either Harrison Wells or the Reverse-Flash.

Cavanagh, who has directed two episodes of Superman & Lois, previously shared back in May 2024 at FAN EXPO Philadelphia that he would be appearing in the DC drama series’ final season. Now, two months later at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing has opened up about Cavanagh joining the Season 4 cast. While his role remains under wraps, Helbing teased that it was the “easiest casting of all time.”

While it was initially reported that Cavanagh would appear in the Superman & Lois series finale, Helbing clarified that the actor’s debut would happen a lot sooner. “Well, it’s first, it’s not the season finale,” Helbing told ComicBook.com. “There’s a lot of cameos, more than any other season I would say, this year. But that came out because it’s a character in the comics and I mean it’s like somebody met Tom Kavanaugh, went back in time, created this character, and then was like, ‘hey, you guys should cast this guy.’ You know, like that. It was the easiest casting of all time.”

Cavanagh is not expected to be reprising his role of Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash in Superman & Lois Season 4. The actor previously portrayed the iconic DC supervillain across all nine seasons of The CW’s The Flash, from 2014 to 2023.

Superman & Lois Season 4 brings the DC drama to a close

Superman & Lois was renewed for a fourth season in June 2023, with The CW announcing that November that it would be the show’s last. The fan-favorite DC superhero drama series follows married couple Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) as they return to Smallville with their twin sons, Jonathan (Michael Bishop), and Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin).

The final season will feature the return of Michael Cudlitz, who debuted at the end of last season as Lex Luthor, as well as the debuts of Yvonne Chapman and Douglas Smith as Amanda McCoy and Jimmy Olsen, respectively.

The conclusion of Superman & Lois also marks the end of almost 20 years of DC superhero content on The CW. Save for the 2010-11 television season, The CW has always had at least one DC superhero series on its schedule. From October 2012 to May 2023, The CW was notable for being the home of the Arrowverse, a shared universe of DC series that included Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, and Black Lightning. Superman & Lois was originally developed as being part of the Arrowverse before the show’s creatives decided to set it in its own universe.

Superman & Lois Season 4 premieres on The CW on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
