Avengers: Jeremy Renner Addresses Coming Back for a Potential OG Cast Reunion Project

While Marvel fans would most likely jump at the chance to see the original six Avengers reassemble for a new movie, Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner isn’t sure it’s a great idea.

In an extensive interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Renner addressed the odds of him reuniting with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson for a new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie despite Downey and Johansson’s characters’ deaths in Avengers: Endgame.

“Maybe if enough time goes by, right? I think it kind of has at this point, but also what is the point of the narrative, the story? These are beloved characters. We did spend 23 films together essentially as a collective,” Renner said. “To start it up, what is the reason? What is the story? Do you have to do more after that? How do you ever resolve this?”

He continued, “When is it ever gonna feel like, ‘Everyone gets their little bow, it feels great, nobody died!’ What happens here? There are no consequences, because it’s like, in the Multiverse here, your death doesn’t mean anything. I’ve got feelings about it. I think everybody does. I think the guys that died have feelings about it.”

Despite these concerns, Renner admitted he is “always down” to return as Clint Barton/Hawkeye. “I think it’d be great. It’d be awesome. I’d love to be with everyone again. But, you know, do they bring back just the OG or they bring back 60 people,” he added.

The original Avengers last assembled in Endgame

The Avengers first assembled in the 2012 movie Marvel’s The Avengers, with the original lineup consisting of Iron Man (Downey), Captain America (Evans), Hulk (Ruffalo), Thor (Hemsworth), Black Widow (Johansson), and Hawkeye (Renner). While this lineup returned for the follow-up, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, it would be the last time all six superheroes were part of the Avengers until the 2019 sequel, Endgame.

After Thanos snapped away half of all life at the end of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the OG six re-assembled for a time heist alongside War Machine, Nebula, and Rocket. It was the last time the original Avengers were together as Black Widow sacrificed herself during the heist to acquire the Soul Stone.

Currently, the Avengers are disassembled in the present-day MCU, although a new team is expected to be formed before the fifth movie hits theaters in 2026. The sixth Avengers movie, subtitled Secret Wars, will be released the following year to close out The Multiverse Saga.

All four Avengers movies can be streamed on Disney+.
