Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor Simu Liu has offered a much-needed update on the long-gestating sequel to the fan-favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
Liu recently responded to a fan on the social media platform Threads who was complaining that Marvel Studios has seemingly “abandoned the Shang-Chi fan base” as there has been minimal effort to get the sequel, which has reportedly been in development since December 2021, into production.
“I proooomiss it’s happening,” commented Liu on the fan’s Threads post. The actor’s reply comes roughly nine months after he told a different fan on the social media platform that he was told Shang-Chi 2 would release after the forthcoming Avengers movies, but was unsure if that was still the case since they keep getting pushed back “due to circumstances beyond my control.”
Co-written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released on September 3, 2021, as part of Phase 4 of the MCU. Although released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shang-Chi defied the odds and became a box office success for Marvel Studios, grossing $432 million worldwide. The movie also broke the record for the largest four-day Labor Day weekend, opening to $94.67 million.
What happened in the first Shang-Chi movie?
In the 2021 superhero movie, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past when his father Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), the leader of the Ten Rings terrorist organization, draws him and his sister Xu Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) into a search for the mythical village, Ta Lo, which is where their mother was from.
In the mid-credits scene, Shang-Chi returns home to San Francisco only to be immediately contacted by Wong (Doctor Strange’s Benedict Wong), who summons the hero to Kamar-Taj to discuss the origins of the ten rings. A post-credits scene, meanwhile, reveals that Xialing has become the new leader of the Ten Rings organization following her father’s passing during the third act of the movie.
