The Penguin: Colin Farrell Teases an ‘Incredibly Violent’ The Batman Continuation

The Penguin star Colin Farrell recently shared that DC fans are in for an “incredibly twisted” chapter in Matt Reeves‘ The Batman Saga.

In an interview with Jonatan Blomberg to promote his upcoming Apple TV+ series, Sugar, the actor — who reprises his role of Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin from Reeves’ The Batman (2022) for The Penguin — confirmed that filming on the Max series had wrapped earlier this month.

“We wrapped it, man. We did it. Stuck a fork in it about two weeks ago. It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell revealed. “And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark, and really heavy, I think, certainly it was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun. I had an amazing time. But it’s incredibly violent.”

What is The Penguin about?

Farrell continued to tease The Penguin, revealing a bit more about what fans can expect from the upcoming series, which is set one week after the events of The Batman.

“It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status,” Farrell explained. “And, you know, the death of Carmine Falcone at the end of [The Batman] leaves this vacuum in Gotham to be filled, and so there are various people that are grabbing for that power, and this is Oswald’s journey trying to rise to the top through extraordinary obstacles. And it’s super dark. [Series creator] Lauren LeFranc wrote an incredibly twisted eight hours of television.”

Announced in September 2021, The Penguin will be the second entry in The Batman Saga, focusing on Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot as he attempts to take control of Gotham’s criminal underworld. With a cameo from Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman rumored but not confirmed, The Penguin will instead focus on Gotham City’s two foremost crime families — the Falcones and the Maronis.

Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother) has been cast as Sofia Falcone, with Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) playing her character’s brother Alberto Falcone and Clancy Brown (Gen V) set to appear as Salvatore Maroni. All three were briefly featured in the first trailer for The Penguin, which was released on March 22.

The Penguin is slated to premiere on Max in the fall of 2024.
