Jonah Hex: Josh Brolin Reflects on Troubled Production, Forgives Director

Josh Brolin continues to slam the underwhelming 2010 adaptation of DC’s Jonah Hex while explaining what went wrong during production.

In an exclusive interview with GQ to promote the release of Dune: Part Two, Brolin did not mince words about the issues surrounding the DC bounty hunter’s ill-fated leap to the big screen. “I won’t ever stop sh—ing on Jonah Hex because it was a sh—y f—ing movie,” Brolin said.

Brolin recalled how Warner Bros. rushed production on Jonah Hex, which led to the hiring of Jimmy Hayward — whose past credits were primarily as an animator for numerous Pixar productions.

“Then you meet somebody who has a lot of knowledge, Jimmy Hayward, and I remember it didn’t feel right,” Brolin said. “I loved that he was excited, but he just didn’t have the experience and he didn’t treat it like I would imagine somebody would want to treat it — to run back to their house at the end of their every day and watch tonal inspirations and Scorsese movies or this or that. He would be out partying instead.”

Co-starring Megan Fox, John Malkovich, and Michael Fassbender, Jonah Hex starred Brolin as an ex-Confederate soldier ambushed by his commanding officer for disobeying orders and gets healed by the Crow people. Possessing the ability to communicate with the dead, Hex becomes a bounty hunter thirsty for revenge. The $47 million budgeted blockbuster only grossed $11 million and was largely panned by critics.

Josh Brolin makes peace with Jonah Hex’s director

In the time since Jonah Hex’s release, Brolin said that he made amends with Hayward following the director’s bone cancer diagnosis which led to numerous surgeries. “It reminded me [that] you can’t just keep sh—ing on somebody,” Brolin said. “I don’t know what the f—’s going on in his life. I mean, total facial reconstruction, the whole thing.”

Brolin can be seen next as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Two opening in theaters on March 1.
