Roland Emmerich generally doesn’t just make disaster movies. He favors disaster movies…with monsters or aliens. So if anyone though that his upcoming Moonfall would JUST be about the moon crashing into Earth, think again. Our largest satellite goes out of orbit not by chance. But because something large, evil, and totally CG is out to kill us all. In the latest Moonfall trailer, we catch a few glimpses of it.
In between the quick looks at what appears to be a sentient metal cloud, Emmerich delivers the gleeful preposterousness we’ve come to expect. A car navigating levitating chunks of ground like Mario World platforms. A space shuttle launching through storms so massive they place it practically underwater. And Patrick Wilson as the exiled bad boy of NASA, who of course becomes part of humanity’s last hope. If he can stand John Bradley’s wisecracks and inappropriate photography, of course.

Per the official synopsis, “In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award® winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all — but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson, Midway) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley, Game of Thrones) believe her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.”
