Tom Hiddleston Says Loki Doesn’t Appear in Thor: Love and Thunder

Ten years after his first appearance in the MCU, Tom Hiddleston is finally getting top billing with the premiere of Marvel’s Loki series on Disney+ in just a few short hours. But this doesn’t change the fact that the God of Mischief has been an indispensable part of Marvel’s Thor films ever since the first installment hit theaters in 2011. Hiddleston hasn’t been spotted on the set of Thor: Love and Thunder in recent months. Regardless many fans assumed his appearance in the sequel was a foregone conclusion. Unfortunately, Hiddleston himself insists that isn’t the case.

During an interview with Empire (via Heroic Hollywood), Hiddleston declared once and for all that Loki won’t show up in Love and Thunder. And in his view, that’s not such a bad thing. After three whole movies (four, if you count The Avengers) that showcased Thor and Loki’s sibling rivalry, it was probably a good idea to move past this idea and pursue other story threads.

“We talked about the Thor movies as a family saga,” said Hiddleston. “And the diametric opposition between Thor and Loki and duality and antagonism being a book that perhaps should remain closed for the moment. We have explored about as much as we can about these two brothers.”

Of course, it’s entirely possible that Hiddleston is lying to throw fans off the trail. But he raises a good point. By the time Thor: Ragnarok premiered, the bickering between Loki and Thor was starting to feel predictable. So maybe it’s for the best that Thor continues to believe that Loki’s dead. For now, anyway…

The first episode of Loki hits Disney+ tonight at midnight PST. Meanwhile, Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on May 6, 2022.
