James Gunn Says Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s Soundtrack is Done

One of the best things about James Gunn returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is that the director’s singular music taste will once again make its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn’s selection of retro pop-rock songs has been a key staple of the Guardians series from the very beginning. While filming won’t start for several months, Gunn already has the next film’s soundtrack ready to go.

Gunn shared this news during another one of his Q&A sessions with fans on Twitter earlier this week. When asked about the soundtrack’s progress, he confirmed that all the songs for the next Awesome Mix have been chosen. He also confirmed that cameras will roll on the threequel by the end of this year.

With artists like Blue Suede, David Bowie, and Electric Light Orchestra on deck, the Awesome Mixes have imbued the Guardians of the Galaxy movies with a buoyant spirit not found in other MCU entries. As a bonus, they let Gunn inject more of his personality into the films themselves. There’s no telling which songs the director has in mind for Marvel’s upcoming trilogy capper. But since Peter Quill ended up replacing his Walkman with a Zune at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it’s possible we’ll be hearing a more modern selection of music this time around.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 23, 2023.
