Johnny Depp Resigns From the Fantastic Beasts Film Franchise

For the last few years, Johnny Depp has been in a protracted legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, as well as media outlets that allege he physically abused her. More recently, Depp lost a libel case against the UK outlet, The Sun, over the paper labeling him a “wife beater.”  In the aftermath of that verdict, Warner Bros. Pictures has asked Depp to resign from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 and any sequels.

Via Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures released a statement confirming the news.

“Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”
