Netflix and Ubisoft Announce an Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series

Is a great era of live-action adaptations from video game stories about to begin? Netflix just announced that they are teaming up with Ubisoft to bring the famous Assassin’s Creed story to the small screens. The streaming service is currently looking for a showrunner for the “genre-bending” live-action adaptation.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” said Jason Altman, Head of Ubisoft Film & Television, in a press release. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.” The game series involves modern-day characters reliving  their ancestors’ memories in multiple historical settings, and it’s not immediately clear which the series will draw primarily from.

Jason Altman from Ubisoft Film & Television will serve as executive producer, along with Danielle Kreinik.

Besides the live-action series, Netflix and Ubisoft have reached a deal for potential animated shows..

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, Vice President, Original Series, Netflix. “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Netflix’s isn’t the first live-action adaptation, as there was a Fox feature film in 2016. In that adaptation, Michael Fassbender portrayed a protagonist named Cal Lynch and his ancestor Aguilar, an assassin in 15th-century Spain. However, even though the movie garnered a lot of publicity, it received a somewhat tepid reaction.

Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the series.
