Even George R.R. Martin had to confess that he didn’t like something about HBO’s Game of Thrones. (And it wasn’t anything in season 8.) The author has always admitted his inability to objectively judge the show, given his familiarity with the source material. In this regard, he is perhaps the only person on Earth who liked the egregious first pilot. But a recent extract from the upcoming Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon book (via Deen of Geek) reveals that a particular scene from the freshman season didn’t meet Martin’s taste at all.
“Where we really fell down in terms of budget was my least favorite scene in the entire show, in all eight seasons: King Robert goes hunting. Four guys walking on foot through the woods carrying spears and Robert is giving Renly [crap]. In the books, Robert goes off hunting, we get word that he was gored by a boar, and they bring him back and he dies. So I never did [a hunting scene]. But I knew what a royal hunting party was like.”

In the TV series, King Robert went hunting together with his brother Renly, Ser Barristan Selmy, and Lancel Lannister. According to Martin, it would have been impossible for a king to have so few men at his side, but there would have been hundreds of huntsmen.
“There would have been horns blowing – that’s how a king goes hunting! He wouldn’t have just been walking through the woods with three of his friends holding spears hoping to meet a boar. But at that point, we couldn’t afford horses or dogs or pavilions.”
Against those odds, it’s no surprise that the boar fatally wounded King Robert, triggering the War of the Five Kings.
Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon hits stores on Oct. 6.
