It’s been almost four years since the producers behind Westworld took Michael Crichton’s 1973 film and turned it into a beloved TV show. Now, the series’ creators are about to try their hand at another Crichton property. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Westworld producer Denise Thé will showrun and executive produce a new series based on the author’s 1987 sci-fi novel, Sphere.
Sphere centers on a team of scientists who journey to the bottom of the ocean and discover a large spacecraft. Director Barry Levinson previously adapted the book into a film in 1998 with a cast headlined by Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie was a critical and financial disappointment, grossing approximately $73 million worldwide against a budget estimated to be no higher than $80 million.

In addition to her work as a producer on Westworld, Thé is also a writer on the series, with her most recent credit being the third season finale that aired earlier this year. She has also written for Gotham, Person of Interest, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Thé will executive produce Sphere alongside Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey will also produce the series through their Team Downey banner.
HBO has not yet set a premiere date for Sphere.
