Amid the ongoing streaming wars, every major platform is hoping to land the next big sci-fi phenomenon. Now that HBO Max has launched, the WarnerMedia-backed streaming service has just dropped the first trailer for its upcoming original series, Raised by Wolves.
HBO Max is hoping to strike gold with sci-fi maestro Ridley Scott’s new project. In the distant future, Raised by Wolves follows two androids tasked with raising human children on a strange new planet after Earth succumbs to the perils of war. However, the arrival of another human named Marcus (Travis Fimmel) throws a wrench into the androids’ plans for their charges. The nascent colony’s future also becomes clouded as religious differences begin to take hold.

The trailer is loaded with the usual gamut of sci-fi tropes, including spaceships and test-tube babies. But what’s particularly jarring is the way the human colony’s primitive structures contrast with the show’s futuristic setting. It’s also a safe bet that Amanda Collin’s performance as the maternal android (simply known as “Mother”) will turn a few heads along the way.
Raised by Wolves comes from creator Aaron Guzikowski, the screenwriter of Denis Villeneuve’s 2013 film, Prisoners. It was first picked up as a TNT original before moving to HBO Max last year. Scott is executive producing the show and also directed the first two episodes. The series will premiere its 10-episode first season on HBO Max on September 3.
