House of the Dragon: HBO Begins Casting Game of Thrones Prequel Series

Filming might be out of the question right now. But even amid the coronavirus pandemic, studios can still accomplish certain behind-the-scenes tasks on upcoming productions, and HBO has just taken a big step toward developing one of its most highly-anticipated new series. Entertainment Weekly brings word that the network has started casting for its Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon.

This latest report doesn’t offer any concrete info about which characters will appear on the show. However, the series is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a companion to the Song of Ice and Fire saga that traces House Targaryen’s history 300 years before Game of Thrones. With this, House of the Dragon could introduce viewers to any number of iron-willed power players. Some of the possibilities include King Viserys I; his heir, Princess Rhaenyra; and Rhaenyra’s younger half-brother, Aegon II, who challenges her claim to the throne.

Needless to say, casting presents its own issue as the world continues to battle COVID-19, since it normally requires multiple people to be in one room together at the same time. Regardless, there are workarounds to this problem. EW doesn’t note how HBO plans to pull this off with House of the Dragon. But other filmmakers, such as Mad Max and Furiosa director George Miller, are conducting their own casting processes over Skype.

HBO has already committed to 10 episodes of House of the Dragon, which comes from showrunner Ryan Condal and veteran Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik. The network is hoping to premiere the series in 2022.
