Lucasfilm’s planned Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff underwent a major shift earlier this year when Kathleen Kennedy ordered rewrites on the series and cut the episode count from six to four. But while the writing staff has changed, Deborah Chow is still onboard as the show’s director. Chow became the first woman to helm a live-action Star Wars adventure when she directed two installments of The Mandalorian’s first season last year. However, Obi-Wan and The Mandalorian are two very different stories. While speaking to Heroic Hollywood, Chow compared and contrasted her experiences on both shows.
Unlike The Mandalorian, Chow is helming every episode of Obi-Wan. That’s an arrangement that has its pros and cons.
“It’s definitely going to be different,” said Chow. “Just in terms of the sheer workload, obviously, of doing the whole thing. But in some ways, I’m going to miss having a team, and having people who are there to bounce ideas off of. But then obviously the flip side is, it is nice to have a coherent voice and know what you’re doing from beginning to end.”

Joby Harold is currently presiding over rewrites on Obi-Wan after taking over from original writer Hossein Amini. Although it explores a different time period in Star Wars history, the series shares one major similarity with The Mandalorian. Namely, the show will utilize the same cutting-edge VFX technology to create diverse planetary backgrounds.
Obi-Wan is expected to begin production in early 2021. The series will eventually premiere on Disney+.
