The upcoming Wonder Woman sequel might wear a sterner and more dystopian look. In a recent interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has revealed that she picked 1984 “for a very specific reason.” The reference is, of course, to George Orwell’s dystopian novel of a surveillance state permanently at war.
The first Wonder Woman is essentially a war movie. Jenkins’s words might imply that in the upcoming movie,the political-thriller component will play an important rule. At least we now have the confirmation that the ’80s are not just a fun setting as previous comments have suggested.

The director went on to add that the upcoming movie is absolutely a sequel. Jenkins also underlined once more that fans should expect a “totally different movie” from the first one.
“There was a little period of time where people got very upset, and questioning: ‘Is it not a sequel? Is it a total reboot?’” Jenkins said. “It is a sequel, insofar as nothing is contradicted between the two movies. But it’s very important to me that it’s not more of the first movie. It’s a totally different movie. Now, when you see the trailer, you can feel it.”
Jenkins’s words echo the ones of Gal Gadot, who plays the titular heroine. The actress has recently teased a very different Diana Prince, revealing that things are going to evolve. We’ll see what she means by that, but in the meanwhile, the movie has also landed a PG-13 rating for action and violence.
