Ahmed Best Says New Star Wars Projects Lack “Faith in the Mythology”

If you feel like the recent Star Wars projects are missing something pivotal, well, you are in good company. Ahmed Best, who played the clumsy Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy, feels like the new Star Wars movies and the related side projects have lost some direction. In a recent interview with YouTube personality Jamie Stangroom, Best said that the new trilogy didn’t put the Force at the center of attention anymore:

“The lack of faith in the mythology is really the thing I find to be missing,” Best said. “We don’t talk about the Force anymore in the Star Wars movies. We’re really about lineage and legacy and line and technology. But the thing that made Star Wars work was the Force. There were two sides: the light side, and the dark side, but we all believed in the Force.”

The actor then explained that Star Wars has always been more than just lightsaber fights, and people were always looking for more meaning into it. He mentioned the Jar Jar-as-Sith-Lord fan theory as an example that involved him personally.

“I think the Darth Jar Jar theory helped a lot because I think the people who really enjoy that theory are the people who aren’t fans of Jar Jar,” Best added. “They are the ones who really fall into the Darth Jar Jar theory as well. Like I’ve said before, there were some things I did that were picked up on, and it’s quite fun, that idea, to think of that. And it goes along with the piece that’s missing, which is the mythology piece, the thing that I think Star Wars is missing. The faith piece, the thing to believe in.”

Best will get the chance to make the difference, though, as he will play a Jedi Master in the upcoming Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge. According to him, the game show he will host on Disney+ will bring back The Force where it deserves once again.

Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge will stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2020, but at the moment the show doesn’t have an official premiere date. Do you agree with Ahmed Best? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
