Gillian Jacobs and Paul Scheer Will Direct Episodes of Marvel 616

Marvel Studios will formally enter the TV market in 2020 when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier drops on Disney+ in the fall. But aside from new scripted MCU adventures, the streaming platform also has a few non-fiction programs in store for subscribers. One such series is Marvel 616, which explores how the Marvel Universe has impacted popular culture over the years. Now, via Marvel.com, the show’s producers have announced who will be directing the initial round of episodes.

Gillian Jacobs and Paul Scheer are among the first celebrities who will step behind the camera for the upcoming series. These are surprising choices, since both of them are primarily known for their acting work. Jacobs is most widely recognized for her roles on NBC’s Community and Netflix’s Love. Meanwhile, Scheer has appeared on shows like The League, Veep, and Black Monday.

Fortunately, Marvel 616 won’t mark either actor’s first foray into directing. Jacobs helmed the documentary short The Queen of Code in 2015; while Scheer has directed episodes of NTSF:SD:SUV (which he created and starred on), Childrens Hospital, and Drive Share. Documentarians David Gelb, Andrew Rossi, and other filmmakers will also helm additional episodes of the series.

Jacobs will direct the series’ first installment, titled “Higher, Further, Faster” after Captain Marvel’s famous mantra/tagline. The episode “will shine a light on the trailblazing women of Marvel Comics and explores how they found ways to tell stories of representation and inclusion.” Details on Scheer, Gelb, and Rossi’s episodes are still unknown. However, the season will cover various topics such as Marvel’s influence on hip-hop, cosplay, high school theater, and more.

Marvel 616 will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2020.
