Dwayne Johnson Reveals the Black Adam Start Date

For five years, Dwayne Johnson has been patiently waiting to play Black Adam. The wrestler-turned-actor was cast as Billy Batson’s dark foil in 2014 and was originally slated to appear in this year’s Shazam! Changes to the script resulted in his character being cut from the story entirely. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because Black Adam is getting his own movie. And now, Johnson has given fans an idea of when cameras will finally start rolling.

Johnson made the announcement on Twitter this morning. He was responding to a fan who crafted a sculpture of Black Adam based on the actor’s likeness. After praising the artist’s work, Johnson shared that production on the film will start next summer. You can check out his post for yourself below.

Johnson’s revelation runs counter to earlier comments made by Black Adam’s producer, Hiram Garcia. Back in July, Garcia said that filming wouldn’t begin until the end of 2020. He explained that it was important to set up the world of Shazam! before they got to work on the spinoff. However, since Johnson is saying that production has moved up, it sounds like things are proceeding ahead of schedule.

Warner Bros. and New Line made a significant bit of headway in Black Adam’s development this summer when they hired Jaume Collet-Serra to direct the film. The studios previously tapped Adam Sztykiel to write the script in 2017, but it’s not clear if they still plan on using his draft. According to both Johnson and Garcia, the movie will show the title character’s evolution from a villain to an anti-hero.

Black Adam is still without a release date. Are you excited for production to start on the Dwayne Johnson-led film? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
