Robert Rodriguez Casts Christian Slater in We Can Be Heroes

The jury’s still out on whether Alita: Battle Angel will ever get a sequel. But until that happens, Robert Rodriguez is busy filling out the cast of his next superhero project. Deadline brings word that Rodriguez has tapped Christian Slater, Pedro Pascal, Akira Akbar, and YaYa Gosselin to star in We Can Be Heroes.

Judging by its description, the movie is cut from the same cloth as Rodriguez’s films aimed at younger audiences, like Spy Kids or The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. We Can Be Heroes centers on the children of Earth’s superheroes. Once aliens kidnap the heroes, the youngsters team up to rescue their parents and save the world.

Deadline doesn’t specify which roles the actors are playing. However, it can be surmised that most of the adult performers are playing the superheroes, with Slater arguably being the most high-profile of the bunch. Since 2015, Slater has been garnering acclaim for playing the title character on Mr. Robot. That series will air its final season on USA later this year. Meanwhile, Pascal is recognized for his work on Game of Thrones and will soon be weathering a completely different fanbase when he headlines The Mandalorian on Disney+.

Akira Akbar is no stranger to superhero projects, having co-starred in Captain Marvel as the 11-year-old Monica Rambeau. Gosselin has previously starred in The Purge and will next appear on CBS’ FBI: Most Wanted. They join a cast that already includes Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Boyd Holbrook, Christopher McDonald, and more.

We Can Be Heroes is currently filming in Texas. No release date is currently set, but it will eventually premiere on Netflix. What do you make of the film’s premise? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
