Jon Favreau Says The Mandalorian Explores the Darker Side of Star Wars

It may not seem like it, but there is quite a lot of pressure on Jon Favreau’s shoulders. His The Mandalorian series is supposed to be the first original production of the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Favreau revealed that fans will see a lot of Mad Max in his Star Wars series.

“If you notice, there’s a certain look that the Mandalorian lead character has, there’s a size that the spaceship is, there’s a scale that lines up with the original trilogy,” Favreau said. “I’m trying to evoke the aesthetics of not just the original trilogy but the first film. Not just the first film but the first act of the first film. What was it like on Tatooine? What was going on in that cantina? That has fascinated me since I was a child, and I love the idea of the darker, freakier side of Star Wars, the Mad Max aspect of Star Wars.”

Speaking of pressure, Favreau is quite used to having huge responsibilities pressed upon him. Like when he directed the first Iron Man movie, which turned out pretty well.

“This feels to me like when we made Iron Man,” he added. “It didn’t feel like the future of Marvel was resting on it, [even though] the future of Marvel was resting on it because if we failed they would have lost their characters that were collateral.”

The main risk is that the Star Wars expanded universe may feel a little bit oversaturated. But all we can do is to wait and see if Jon Favreau’s idea will be successful.

The first season of The Mandalorian will be available on Disney+ starting November 12. Are you curious about discovering the darker, freakier side of Star Wars? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
