Do we have Thor star Chris Hemsworth to thank for getting the right Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? When the time came to choose a new face to play the web-slinger, Hemsworth had a name in mind: Tom Holland. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Hemsworth revealed that he did all he could to help his once and future costar.
“I mean, look, we worked on In the Heart of the Sea together, obviously, then through Avengers and as they were casting him for Spider-Man, I did what I could do and made a call and said he’s one of the most talented people I’ve worked with and has such a big heart and appreciation,” Hemsworth said. “I don’t know, we have a great friendship, it’s a good mutual respect.”

Holland made his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War back in 2016. The British actor’s performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and In the Heart of the Sea impressed the studios and producers and secured him the role of Peter Parker in the highest-grossing film of 2016. Holland became also the youngest actor to play a title role in the MCU.
Holland originally ran head to head against Asa Butterfield for the role of our beloved friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. A reference from someone who already had an established role in the MCU may have helped Marvel Studios break the tie. Evidently, Hemsworth was right, given that many fans praise Holland as the best on-screen Spider-Man to date.
Tom Holland will make his return as Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home. Do you think that Hemsworth’s reference for Holland helped? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
