The Batman Director Matt Reeves Confirms Robert Pattinson’s Casting

Now that we know Robert Pattinson will don the cowl for the upcoming feature The Batman, director Matt Reeves posted a seemingly cryptic response to the news on Twitter. You can see the Tweet itself right here.

While Reeves only typed a triptych of bat emojis, the GIF that accompanies it is from Good Time, a 2017 crime drama where Pattinson shined in the starring role. This could read as refuting the naysayers who’ve automatically written off Pattinson as the star of the teen-friendly Twilight franchise. Or just express Reeves’ excitement at finally being able to move forward with the long-gestating project.

The Batman has been in development at Warner Bros. since 2015 when Ben Affleck signed on to the DCEU, with various script drafts by Affleck and Geoff Johns being submitted to the studio. Affleck was attached to direct for a while before stepping down due to being overwhelmed with the project. Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) signed on to helm about a month after Affleck’s directorial departure with the added caveat that he’d get to rewrite the script from scratch.

Reeves has previously indicated we can expect a character-driven project focusing on Batman’s experiences as the world’s greatest detective. The filmmaker has also said to expect a “Rogue’s Gallery” of villains in the movie. Currently, The Batman will see release on June 25, 2021.
