When Disney acquired Fox’s entertainment assets earlier this year, the fate of The New Mutants was up in the air. While Dark Phoenix will wrap up the Fox X-Men movies next month, Disney is pushing The New Mutants back into 2020.
Disney has announced an updated release slate, which puts The New Mutants on the schedule for an April 3, 2020 debut. That’s two years after the initially planned 2018 release date. The film is based upon Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod’s comic about young mutant heroes who were trained to be the next generation of X-Men. Director Josh Boone embraced some of the comic’s darker elements to make it a superhero horror film. However, the planned reshoots to make the film scarier never occurred. It’s unclear if Disney plans to invest in this film or if the studio will simply release it as is.

Additionally, Disney took the remaining Fox Marvel movies off of the schedule. The only one that had been officially announced was Gambit, which had been slated to come out on March 13, 2020. However, that film was never able to hold down a director despite landing Channing Tatum as Gambit. Fox didn’t reveal the names of the other three Marvel movies that were previously given dates. But the remaining Fox Marvel films will likely never be made.
