Game of Thrones Language Builder Joins Denis Villeneuve’s Dune

After crafting the Dothraki and Valyrian languages for HBO’s Game of Thrones, David J. Peterson is now boarding a space ship to Arrakis. Speaking with io9, Peterson revealed that he is working on Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune where the majority of characters speak Galach (typically just spoken as English), but the world created by Frank Herbert features many exotic languages.

I asked [the studio before the interview], especially because it seemed like every day you’re jumping on Twitter and, ‘Oh this person is working on Dune.’ I’m like, ‘Can I say I’m working on Dune?’ They said, ‘Yeah you can say you’re working on Dune, but you can’t say anything about what you’re doing,’” Peterson said.

Furthermore, he confirmed that security on the set of Game of Thrones‘ final season was more severe than ever.

This season I didn’t get partial scripts,Peterson said. And I would’ve been very insulted by that but it turns out the same was true of the actors. I only got the specific lines that I needed to translate and maybe like a very, very minimal bit of context to set up the scene. When you entered and left the actual set you had to go through a security gate where you put stickers on the cameras on your phone. You couldn’t even accidentally record anything.

Set in the distant future, Dune follows Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families. After Atreides is betrayed, he leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign.

The cast for the Dune movie includes Josh Brolin, Timothee Chalamet , Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling.

Dune comes out November 20, 2020. Which language do you think Peterson is building for Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming movie? Let us know in the comments section below.
