Next week, EA will release BioWare’s latest game, Anthem, and thrust gamers into a brand new realm. To set the stage for Anthem, EA and BioWare recruited director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) to helm a live-action trailer. EA has released Blomkamp’s short, Anthem: Conviction, and it offers an intriguing glimpse of the game’s world.
Conviction isn’t a complete story unto itself, but it does feature the armored Freelancers discovering an enigmatic woman in the jungle. That discovery threatens to tear apart the Freelancers’ unity, and leads to betrayal and an epic showdown. The unnamed narrator also shares a few of the historical details about the rise of the Freelancers, as well as the steps humanity took to survive.

Intriguingly, one the characters describes the Anthem as if it is alive. “The Anthem swims through your mind, it knows you, it knows us all.” Perhaps it has religious connotations in this world. However, the answers probably won’t be apparent until the game has been thoroughly explored.
In Anthem, players will assume control of their Freelancer characters and wear their armored suits, which are called Javelins. Each of the Javelin suits are fully customizable, and they can grant the wearer enhanced weapons and superhuman abilities. Additionally, BioWare reportedly has long term plans for its new franchise, which are only beginning to unfold. That probably means a number of armor upgrades and DLC expansions in the years to come.
Anthem will hit PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on February 22. You can watch the Conviction trailer below. What did you think about Neill Blomkamp’s trailer? Would you like to see Blomkamp tackle a full length live-action Anthem movie? Let us know in the comment section below!
