Peter Dinklage Calls His Game of Thrones Ending ‘Beautifully Bittersweet’

With the final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones on the horizon, star Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, has teased the series ending to Vulture.

I feel very, very — I’m trying to find the right word,” the actor said. “I think he was given a very good conclusion. No matter what that is — death can be a great way out.”

While that certainly sounds like Tyrion, a fan favorite since the show’s earliest days, will meet his fate in the series — which is known for killing off beloved characters. But Dinklage explained that his last day filming Game of Thrones wasn’t the same as the last time viewers will see Tyrion in the series.

It’s always anticlimactic for the character’s last day. Nothing is shot chronologically, so you don’t get some big mountaintop scene or anything. It’s just, ‘That’s a wrap on Peter Dinklage.’ But as anticlimactic as it was, my last day was also beautifully bittersweet.”

Dinklage also referred to one of his co-stars, who he didn’t name, but said their last day shooting was particularly difficult. “I won’t say their name or their character’s name, but one of the young people on the show wrapped this past season and everybody was a wreck. This person had grown up on the show, you know? They were a child and now they were an adult. And then they’re done. It’s like we were witnessing this person saying goodbye to their childhood. I know ‘Game of Thrones’ is just a TV show, la-di-da, but it was our life.”

Even though Dinklage didn’t get into specifics, he could be referring to one of the two Stark daughters, played by Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Both started the show as children, and have literally grown up in front of the audience over the past seven — soon to be eight — seasons.

The final season of Game of Thrones will premiere sometime in 2019. Though it likely won’t be our last trip to Westeros, as HBO has greenlit a pilot set sometime before the events of the wildly popular sword and sorcery epic.
