John Boyega Says Star Wars: Episode IX Won’t Keep Finn & Rey Apart

It’s become a tradition in Star Wars trilogies for the middle chapters to split our heroes up, whether its Han & Leia and Luke going their separate ways in Empire Strikes Back, or Anakin & Padme and Obi-Wan going on their own adventures in Attack of the Clones. Last December’s The Last Jedi proved no different, putting Finn & Poe and Rey on different story tracks that only overlapped towards the end. Now John Boyega has confirmed at Washington DC’s annual Awesome Con (via SlashFilm) that J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX will bring this trilogy’s favorite duo Finn & Rey back together in the third act.

“I haven’t read the script for ‘Episode 9,’ but Daisy did shoot me a text saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together. That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again,'” Boyega confirmed.

If Poe and Rey meeting at the end of The Last Jedi is any indication, we could also see the sequel trilogy’s primary trio team up for an adventure together for the first time. Here’s hoping!

According to Bounding Into Comics, Boyega also dropped some some info about his potential involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying he has met with Marvel about playing a superhero in a movie years down the line. He also squelched the rumor that he would play Blade, stating that it would be a “spit in the face of Wesley [Snipes] if I took Blade,” adding that he was “all for Wesley [Snipes] playing Blade.”

J.J. Abrams will direct the Star Wars: Episode IX and co-write the script with Chris Terrio (Justice LeagueArgo). Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm. Previously set for a May 24, 2019 release date, the film will now arrive on December 20, 2019.

The characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Episode IX can currently be seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, now playing in theaters globally. Written and directed by Rian Johnson (BrickLooper), the film continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Domhnall Gleeson as Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke. New cast members include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro as DJ, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Holdo and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran as Rose.
