Blade Runner, Star Wars, Logan Oscar Nods, Plus Wonder Woman Shut Out

This morning, the 90th Oscars nominations were announced, and genre fans got to see several of their favorite blockbusters from this year get some love from the Academy, including Blade Runner, Star Wars and Logan Oscar nods.

Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 received five nominations, all technicals. As expected, the sequel’s gorgeous cinematography by Roger Deakins got a nomination, as did Dennis Gassner and Alessandra Querzola for Best Production Design. Ron Bartlett, Doug Hemphill and Mac Ruth earned a Sound Mixing nomination, Mark Mangini and Theo Green for Sound Editing, and John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Richard R. Hoover were nominated for Best Visual Effects, the latter proving that practical model work is still a viable technique.

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi received four nominations. Legendary composer John Williams earned his 51st nomination for his Original Score, while David Parker, Michael Semanick, Ren Klyce and Stuart Wilson got a Sound Mixing nod, Matthew Wood and Ren Klyce for Sound Editing, and Ben Morris, Mike Mulholland, Neal Scanlan and Chris Corbould for Visual Effects.

James Gunn’s Marvel superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Jonathan Fawkner and Dan Sudick), Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ stylish monster movie Kong: Skull Island (Stephen Rosenbaum, Jeff White, Scott Benza and Mike Meinardus), and Matt Reeves’ sci-fi threequel War for the Planet of the Apes (Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett, Dan Lemmon and Joel Whist) all got Visual Effects nods as well.

James Mangold’s Logan earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (screenplay by Scott Frank & James Mangold and Michael Green; story by James Mangold), which is notable for the superhero realm.

Unfortunately for another superhero film, Patty Jenkins’ critical and box office phenomenon Wonder Woman was entirely shut out from any nominations, including Director, Screenplay, Visual Effects and Lead Actress Gal Gadot. As many predicted, it appears possible that the taint of this November’s disastrous Justice League may have poisoned the well, with one poorly-received Wonder Woman movie cancelling out the beloved one. It could also simply be bias against the genre, with Logan being an exception for casting away its comic book trappings (no costumes, etc) for a more grounded, neo-western tone. Still, Christopher Nolan’s 2008 sequel The Dark Knight got plenty of Oscar love, and Jenkins as well as Gadot will get another shot when DC’s Wonder Woman 2 drops in 2019.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second-straight year, the 90th Oscars telecast will air on Sunday, March 4, 2018 and will begin at 8:00pm EST/5:00pm PST, a half hour earlier than the prior Oscars broadcast.
