Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi exploded to a global opening of $450 million! The film entered the record books with an estimated domestic opening of $220 million to become the No. 1 debut of 2017 and the No. 2 debut of all time behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $247.9 million. Internationally, excluding China (it opens there on January 5), Star Wars: The Last Jedi grossed $230 million from 54 markets.
The $450 million global debut ranks as the No. 5 opening of all time, behind only The Fate of the Furious (including China), Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World (including China), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The new Star Wars movie had a $40.6 million global IMAX debut from 776 screens, which is the second-best global debut ever in IMAX history (excluding China) after Star Wars: the Force Awakens.
Here’s the market breakdown so far: UK $36.7M; Germany $23.6M; France $18.1M; Australia $15.9M; Japan $14.4M; Russia $8.5M; Spain $8.3M; Brazil $7.2M; Italy $7.0M; Mexico $7.0M; Sweden $6.0M; and Korea $5.1M.
Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One, Star Wars: The Last Jedi received an A CinemaScore from audiences, which should mean a healthy road ahead for the film’s box office.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper) and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Justice League rounded out the top five with $4.2 million, to take its total to $219.5 million domestically. Internationally, the comic book movie earned $5.3 million and has now brought in $414.5 million ($103.9 million from China alone), for a global total of $634 million. Comparing the movie to previous DC Comics films, Man of Steel grossed $668 million worldwide, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took in $873.3 million, Suicide Squad earned $745.6 million, and Wonder Woman brought in $821.8 million. Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, and J.K. Simmons.
And dropping to seventh place was Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, which grossed $3 million its seventh weekend for a domestic total of $306.4 million. With the international total of $535.4 million(with $112 million of that coming from China), the movie’s global total stands at $841.8 million. The first Thor earned $449.3 million worldwide and Thor: The Dark World took in $644.5 million globally. Made for $180 million, the Taika Waititi-directed Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins.
