We may be getting a Logan spinoff focusing on Laura and Jackman talks recasting Wolverine
Logan, starring Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Eriq La Salle, Stephen Merchant, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez and directed by James Mangold, is still one of the best reviewed movies of 2017. A spinoff may be in the works and will center on Laura (Keen), according to THR. “We’re just working on a script,” Mangold told the site.
He spoke about having a female lead in a superhero film, post Wonder Woman. He said, “Patty’s [Jenkins] success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”
Jackman has retired his adamantium claws and says he won’t be involved in any capacity in a spinoff. He told the site, “No, I won’t be a producer on a Laura sequel. But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it though. She is just phenomenal.” He also said of someone else playing his iconic role in future films, “I know someone will. I hope it will be recast.”
Set in the near future, Logan follows a weary Logan as he cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.
