Rian Johnson Talks Freedom Working on Last Jedi, New Photo Revealed

Empire has revealed a new image from the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, featuring John Boyega’s Finn and Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose in the brand new casino city, Canto Bight, which you can check out in the gallery below.

In addition, the outlet spoke with director Rian Johnson about the upcoming film and he spoke about the freedom and openness he felt working on the title.

“I was terrified coming into this that I was gonna be like Barton Fink and have a script that was due six months ago and I’m still on page three writing about fishmongers. But it’s the most fun I’ve ever had writing something. The whole experience was incredible: just tapping into my ten-year-old self. Even though it’s Star Wars, the whole thing has felt bizarrely similar to my experience making Looper or Brick or The Brothers Bloom.”

Following yesterday’s news that director Colin Trevorrow would no longer be directing Star Wars: Episode IX, and that Johnson was the potential front runner for the position, the director also offered an interesting anecdote about the future planning of the franchise saying:

“The perception of these films is that they’re all planned out on a secret sheet of paper in advance, but that’s just not the case. I wasn’t given an outline of where it goes or even a list of things to hit. It really was just, ‘Okay, what’s next?’”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Domhnall Gleeson as Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran as Rose.

The sequel is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in regular and IMAX theaters on December 15, 2017.
