Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Zhang Ziyi joins Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Zhang Ziyi has just joined the Legendary and Warner Bros. cinematic MonsterVerse and will star in the upcoming film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Legendary announced that they’ve closed a deal with Zhang Ziyi in a major franchise role, beginning with the next Godzilla film opposite Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford and Ken Watanabe. The film is set several years after the events of the 2014 Godzilla, and the character is a significant figure within the covert Monarch organization established in that film. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will hit theaters on March 22, 2019. The film will be directed by Michael Dougherty.

The previous Godzilla film, directed by Gareth Edwards, brought in $529 million at the global box office and starred Aaron Johnson. Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston.

Dougherty is also writing King of the Monsters with Zach Shields. Legendary previously announced the addition of several more famous Toho kaiju, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.

King of the Monsters is part of the Legendary and Warner Bros. cinematic MonsterVerse, which includes, in addition to Godzilla and the recent Kong: Skull Island, the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feature film, set for a May 22, 2020 release. Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) is set to helm the kaiju tentpole.

Zhang Ziyi received Golden Globe award, BAFTA award and Screen Actors Guild award nominations for her role in Memoirs of a Geisha, and a BAFTA nomination for House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She’s also known for her work in films like Hero2046 and The Grandmaster. She also appeared in Rush Hour 2, and has produced the films Sophie’s RevengeMy Lucky Star and Oh My God.
