Hellboy Actors Break Bread, Plus Make-Up Tests for the Reboot Begin

Hellboy actors break bread, plus make-up tests begin

The Hellboy reboot is already in full swing, and to get things started on the right foot, actor David Harbour held a detente dinner with former Big Red actor Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army), with superfan Patton Oswalt mediating between the once and future Hellboy actors. Check out the quotes by all involved below, along with a photo in our gallery of Harbour beginning Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen make-up tests for Hellboy’s infamous “right hand of doom”!

“Not since Bill Clinton, Menachem Begin, and Anwar Sadat has there been such an epic summit yelding such a little result,” Perlman posted to Facebook. “Apparently Patton Oswalt aka balvenieboy thought it was a good idea to host David Harbour and yours truly for a detente dinner. The result: i gained 3 pounds and ruined my liver. Meanwhile, good luck kid! Signed, the babe.”

“Patton brokered a peace, it was incredible,” Harbour told Yahoo about their dinner. “I had reached out to Ron because I’m a big fan of his. He’s a really sweet guy and we wanted to just talk shop, and I just thought Patton Oswalt would be the perfect chaperone in case Ron and I started to make out or we started dancing too close or if we started getting in a fistfight.”

“I would not be doing Hellboy if it wasn’t for ‘Stranger Things,’ no,” Harbour added. “I would not. A lot of people responded to it. It’s got a lot of elements — Hopper is a very complicated character and has a lot of levels. And he is heroic, but he’s messed up, and I think they want this for this Hellboy as well. I think the films did a certain thing, the comics do a certain thing. Hellboy is kind of a neurotic, messed-up individual who’s destined for a horrible fate. He’s destined to become the beast of the apocalypse. Whenever he shows up and does the right thing, people throw beers at him and show up with pitchforks and he still manages to do the right thing. I think it’s funny and it’s sweet and it’s weird, and hopefully I can bring that to it as well.”

Set to be an R-rated adventure, Millennium Films is hoping to start production on the film this September with director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) behind the camera and starring David Harbour of Stranger Things as the title hero. The film will also feature a script by Andrew Cosby (Eureka), Christopher Golden and Mignola.

First appearing in comics in 1993, Hellboy is a demon summoned from Hell by the Nazi occultists near the end of World War II. Raised by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm of Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy went on to be billed as “The World’s greatest occult detective.” The adventures of the character have been chronicled in countless comics, including his time with the Bureau, his early years as a young boy, and even the time he spent in hell after dying on Earth. The main Hellboy title has also served as a launching pad for other characters and stories including Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, BPRD, Sledgehammer 44 and others!

The first Hellboy movie hit theaters in April of 2004 with Ron Perlman in the title role. It was produced on a $66 million budget and earned $99 million worldwide. Del Toro’s sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, debuted in July of 2008 on a budget of $85 million and earned $160.3 million.
