X-Force Movie Update: Simon Kinberg Teases ‘R-rated Decibel’

Simon Kinberg teases an “R-rated decibel” for the X-Force movie

With James Mangold‘s Logan now doing massive business at the box office, 20th Century Fox has their second major R-rated Marvel hit. Speaking to Deadline, producer Simon Kinberg teases the studio’s upcoming X-slate and suggests that the forthcoming X-Force movie is likely to follow suit.

“[The X-Force movie] is a combination of Deadpool, and Cable,” he tells the outlet. “They’re like the Black Ops of the X-Men. They’re much darker and have an R-rated decibel. There are other X-Men characters coming into X-Force at different times in the comic, but it’s separate from X-Men.”

While Kinberg stresses that not every upcoming X-Men film will or should have an R-rating, there are some — such as the upcoming Deadpool sequel — where an R rating seems like a prerequisite to tell the right story.

“Should a story be readily told in a PG-13 fashion, it should be for creative, not business reasons,” he says. “The success of ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan’ have bolstered our confidence to make edgy, more daring, provocative bold movies that audiences will embrace. More than that, we feel a responsibility to make bold and provocative movies.”

As previously reported, the X-Force movie will function as Deadpool‘s third big screen chapter (or fourth, if you really want to count X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and will bring back the sequel’s new additions, the yet to be cast Cable and Domino. Kinberg makes it sound like X-Force has plans to go into production soon, joining an X-Men movies slate that also includes Josh Boone’s New Mutants, a Gambit film starring Channing Tatum, and a main X-Men movie that Kinberg himself is in the running to direct.

“There is a larger architecture to tell these stories in,” Kinberg continues. “I talk to the studio all the time about this and there is a plan for how these movies can connect and be a part of a larger narrative. It’s something that’s fun, exciting and it will be interesting to see how we marry the different tones that we’ve been generating in these standalone movies of the X-Men universe. But we go into making the best movie we can.”

David Leitch is directing Ryan Reynolds in the Deadpool sequel, which is being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, “the real heroes here” behind the original Deadpool.
