The Dark Tower Set Photos with Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg

Production continues on the highly-anticipated feature film of The Dark Tower. Though principal photography was primarily taking place in South Africa, cameras are briefly rolling in New York City and the sequence being filmed features none other than Matthew McConaughey as the chief villain, Randall Flagg. You can check out the photos of McConaughey in costume below!

Though unconfirmed, perhaps the scene being filmed depicts the events in the book series that lead to Jake Chambers (played by Tom Taylor) joining Roland in Mid-World after being removed from our own reality.

McConaughey is joined in The Dark Tower by Idris Elba (LutherPacific Rim) as Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury RoadThe Neon Demon) as the film’s female lead, Tirana, and Fran Kranz (The Cabin in the Woods) as Pimli, the right hand man of Flagg. The film also features Jackie Earle Haley (WatchmenA Nightmare on Elm Street), Katheryn Winnick (Vikings) and Claudia Kiim (Avengers: Age of Ultron).

In a cryptic tweet last month, series creator and author Stephen King seemed to imply that the forthcoming film wasn’t a direct adaptation of The Dark Tower book series but actually a continuation, focusing on Roland’s final cycle in his pursuit of the titular location. The film’s director Nikolaj Arcel and King also previously said that the film would be different from the books, potentially further teasing that the movie is both an adaptation and a sequel to the series.

Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed the Academy Award-nominated A Royal Affair, is set to helm the big screen adaptation, set up through Sony Pictures and MRC. Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have written the screenplay. It is scheduled for release on February 17, 2017.
