Misfits Remake in Development from Gossip Girl, The O.C. Creators

Following the news earlier today that Freeform (previously ABC Family) had issued a series order for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, the network has now revealed they’re developing a US version of the hit UK series Misfits. Gossip Girl co-creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (who worked together on the Schwartz-created The O.C.) will executive produce the series for ABC Signature Studios.

The original series was created by Howard Overman and tells the story of a group of young juvenile offenders forced to work out community service that develop superpowers after being struck by lightning. The series explored the realities of teenage life and the character’s incarceration as they learned how to handle their new abilities and find out just what, if anything, they are expected to do with them.

Misfits ran for five series from 2009 to 2014 for a total of 37 episodes. Overman was awarded the 2010 BAFTA Television Award for Best Drama Series.

Cast members of the original series have gone on to star in several other fan-favorite series, including Iwan Rheon as Ramsay Bolton on Game of Thrones and Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy in the AMC’s upcoming adaptation of Preacher.
