Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 WonderCon Panel Recap

Stars Megan Fox and Stephen Amell took the stage at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 WonderCon panel!

Paramount Pictures‘ big screen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows took the stage at LA Live‘s Microsoft Theater Friday night as part of the WonderCon 2016 festivities. Stars Megan Fox and Stephen Amell joined producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 WonderCon panel that, in addition to offering a Q&A with the stars, officially revealed that Portlandia star Fred Armisen will be voicing Krang. There was also a brief bit of footage showcased for the first time featuring Amell’s Casey Jones.

The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 WonderCon panel footage concentrated on a confrontation between Fox’s April O’Neil and the villainous Foot clan in a New York alleyway. She’s chased because she has something they want (ooze, perhaps? She’s clutching a high tech vial of something). Just as it looks like she’s surrounded, the Foot guys begin to get knocked out by flying objects. It turns out that they’re coming from Casey Jones, who has leapt in to save the day, hockey mask and all.

At the conclusion of the fight, there’s a bit of comedy with a gag that Casey Jones can’t speak very easily under the mask.

“Stacey Moans?” April asks after he tries to tell her his name.

“Casey Jones is not really a sophisticated fighter,” Amell told the crowd when comparing Jones to his popular Arrow character. “He’s more like ‘see foot clan, hit foot clan!’ … [He] has a beef to settle with two of the people that the turtles are after in Bebop and Rocksteady. he has information that they want and he very unwillingly comes with them on their journey.”

Amell wound up fielding quite a few questions from fans of both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the DC Comics series. He even answered a question about which fictional character would win in a fight.

“Oliver would beat Casey Jones,” Amell admitted, “but Oliver, stupidly, wouldn’t kill him and then Casey would come back and ruin his life.”

That sounds about par for the course in the life of Oliver Queen whose presence, Amell admits, was very much felt on the set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

“I had to break the reaction of, anytime there’s trouble, reaching back into my quiver,” he laughed.

Amell also apologized for not having Casey Jones’ traditional long hair, but says that the classic look could still come sometime down the road.

“When we meet Casey in the movie, he is far from a vigilante carrying a hockey stick,” Amell explained. “He’s a corrections officer. I don’t think that long hair totally fits the police force.”

Fox herself is excited to explore some new sides to April.

“I think the first movie spent a lot of time on April being ambitious and trying to achieve a lot career wise,” she said “This time it focuses more on her relationship with the turtles and a sense of family. It’s more focused on the character and less focused on April’s job.”

As the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 WonderCon panel continued, producers talked about a few of the familiar franchise characters that will be making their live-action debut on the big screen and one that secretly made an appearance in the first film.

“Baxter [Stockman] shows up for about six frames in movie one,” said Form. “He was in movie one and his character got cut out of the movie… He’s running TCRI and working with Shredder. He’s definitely responsible for helping to mutate Bebop and Rocksteady.”

Tyler Perry is playing the Stockman role while WWE star Sheamus is set to play Rocksteady opposite Gary Anthony Williams as Bebop.

“We call them the idiots,” says Form of the mutant pair. “…They’re Shredder’s henchmen and they really bring a lot of comic relief to this movie… Seeing them mutate on the screen is really fun.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows also stars Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Laura Linney, Brittany Ishibashi, Brian Tee, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, and Noel Fisher. Directed by Earth to Echo‘s David Green, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is set for release on June 3, 2016.
