Batman v Superman to Address the Catastrophic Destruction in Man of Steel

As the Batman v Superman promotional train leaves the station towards its March 25 release, director/DC Films mastermind Zack Snyder has gone on record to Famous Monsters of Filmland about how the sequel will address the issues people had with the catastrophic level of destruction in Man of Steel. Also be sure to check out the gorgeous cover to the February 2 issue of the magazine, which you can view below in the gallery!

“I stand by it, because for me, I’ve always said when I was working on ‘Watchmen’ — and maybe it’s sort of left over from a ‘Watchmen’ philosophical sort of thing — that there should be consequences to superheroes’ interaction with the earth,” Snyder explains. “And that was kind of the way that we approached ‘Man of Steel.’ I wanted a big consequence to Superman’s arrival on earth. Certainly, ‘Batman v Superman’ sort of cashes in all its chips on the ‘why’ of that destruction.”

Of course, if the trailers have been any indication, Snyder has seemingly compounded the level of mayhem and citywide damage in the new film. As for where we find its battle-hardened iteration of Batman, as played by Ben Affleck, Snyder leans into the idea that this is a veteran hero going up against Henry Cavill’s younger, more inexperienced Clark Kent and the rivalry that forms out of their opposing ideologies.

“He’s not yet tired of his place in the world. He’s definitely still tooth-and-nailing it,” Snyder says of Batman. “The discovery of the story is that Batman fights Superman. Now move your superhero chess pieces so that can happen. And it can happen in a credible and interesting way. … It’s just incredibly satisfying and fun to dig into these two mythological characters and find a through line that allows them to come into conflict in a way that not only is philosophically satisfying, but also physically real.”

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent/Superman and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, joined by Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter in a role newly created for the film. Jason Momoa will also be making an appearance as Aquaman.

Will Batman v Superman adequately address the complaints fans had with Man of Steel or make things worse? Let us know in the comments!
